As a dad getting ready to present at Career Day at our local middle school, I could not find a fun way to communicate the continuing fun of radio. I built a slide deck and the accompanying collateral. I'd like for you to have it free so that you'll have a starting place when your turn comes up.
Make it relevant
The teacher asked all of us to be relevant to a middle schooler. Get them involved. Interact.
So that's what we did. I asked what was their favorite radio station--EVERY middle schooler had their favorite station. We talked about how much cable charges for TV, how much newspaper charges, how much internet access costs...and how FREE radio is. The job that I have--along with thousands of friends coast-to-coast--is to keep radio free.
We looked at three radio facts (and the kids wrote down the info). I talked about my role in helping keep radio free.
Then, we all rehearsed the classic Stan Freberg spot for radio that drains Lake Michigan, fills it with hot chocolate and drops a cherry on the whipped cream. Two of the kids voiced it and the rest of the class was the sound effects department. Later, we closed our eyes and listened to the spot that Freberg produced. They really understood that radio is the most visual of the media, because it doesn't have to use the eyes to create a picture.
Make it yours FREE
Next time you get the opportunity for a career day presentation, please feel free to use this slide deck and the scripts as a starting point. You can find all the downloads
